What’s in a name? Hilarity!

Dusty Napoleon, Beamer Weems, and Gonzalo Gonzalez may never see a major league clubhouse, but they can still get their names in the baseball record books thanks to, well, their names. These aspiring big leaguers are in the running for the 2009 award for best name in the Minor Leagues.

The third annual “Minors Moniker Madness” contest, held by milb.com, allows fans to choose their favorite Minor League Baseball player names by completing a NCAA Basketball style bracket (instead of Duke versus Louisville, think Darlin Duran versus Darling Read). The previous two installments of the contest were won, or lost, depending on how you look at it, by Will Startup and Houston Summers.

Among the notable entries in this year’s name-off are the “so nice we named them twice” players Henry Henry and Jose Jose – each of whom hold the unique distinction of having both their first and last names on the back of their jersey, the “future in adult video” players Ronald Prettyman, Brett Butts, Dante Love, and Neudy Clime, and the “concession stand all-stars” Mark Hamburger, Rocky Cherry, and Callix Crabbe.
